Rush
Courier foxThe smallest in the village, the fastest. Stubborn: he jumps over obstacles because he never learned to go around them. He wears his grandmother's red scarf.
The Daylight Crystal has shattered and the Shadow is devouring the world. Rush, a courier fox with a red scarf, crosses ten worlds to bring back the ten Dawn Shards.
The sun does not rise on its own: it is carried.
Every dawn, a courier leaves the tower with a spark of the Daylight Crystal in a lantern and hands it on from village to village, to the end of the roads. In return, the world's mail travels back to the tower: letters, songs, news. The Crystal shines on everything it is told.
Rush is the smallest in the village, and the fastest. His grandmother Alba, a courier, gave him her old red scarf. "I always come back," she said at every departure. One evening she left with her lantern. She never came home.
Then the Daylight Crystal shattered. Ten Dawn Shards were flung to the four corners of the world. The next morning, no sun: the Shadow rose, and it erases the roads, the colours and the names.
Rush kept his grandmother's letter, never opened: "To be opened only at the end of the road". His scarf is warm on one side only, as if it were pulling towards the forest. There is no time to ask why. A courier is given an address, and goes. He runs.
The smallest in the village, the fastest. Stubborn: he jumps over obstacles because he never learned to go around them. He wears his grandmother's red scarf.
A courier all her life, she spent it on the roads. At every departure she said: "I always come back." One evening, she did not.
No face, no voice: an immense cold that erases the roads, the colours and the names. With every world, it is a little closer.
Rush is a courier: he is given an address, and goes. The addresses are the shards. Each world has kept its own behind its own defences.
This is where Rush grew up. The old trees pass secrets from branch to branch, and tonight they are all whispering the same thing: a shard has fallen by the stream.
Hazard Logs roll down the path. The great city no longer waits for the dawn: it lights itself with neon. But under the mist the lights are going out one by one, and at the top of the clock tower something shines with a much older glow.
Hazard The runaway cars never brake. The sand swallows whole caravans, and the nomads say a shard sleeps beneath a mirage. The desert remembers every courier who ever crossed it.
Hazard Balls of thorns bounce everywhere.A shard was flung all the way to the stars. Up there, no wind, no sound: only the ruins of a station and barriers of light that still close, as if someone were still keeping watch.
Hazard Laser barriers snap shut without warning. The cold has frozen the rivers, and time with them. The ground slips away under your paws: here you must learn to slide without losing your way.
Hazard Giant snowballs come tumbling down the slopes. The volcano woke up when it felt the shard. Lava overflows, fire geysers burst. There is only one path, and it is burning.
Hazard Balls of lava burst from the flows.A shard rests in the heart of the great cake. Everything here is sweet, even the traps, and nobody seems to notice the Shadow creeping closer.
Hazard Cherry jellies bounce along the road.Beneath the jungle sleep the ruins of a sun temple. Its stone guardians have woken. They say this temple long kept the secret of day and night.
Hazard A giant boulder rolls up behind you.The machines are still running, with no one to tend them. In this old mail factory, not a single letter leaves any more.
Hazard Conveyor belts speed up or slow down your run. Here the Shadow is at home. Ghosts drift in and out of the dark, and the last shard glows far at the bottom. Bring back the dawn, or the night will stay forever.
Hazard Ghosts appear and disappear.Every shard holds a memory. From world to world, Rush pieces together what he never knew about his own grandmother.
It has no claws and no face. What it wants, and why it was born, nobody knows yet.
The traps are the shards' defences, not its own. It simply keeps advancing.
And at the end of the road, an answer that changes the meaning of the title.
